President’s Message

Hello and happy warm weather days. Finally!

I am taking the opportunity to officially welcome you to the season and thank you for the effort you make travelling to Duncan McKinnon on a Friday night. We are nearly there…the sandy aths track is nearly completed!

By way of introduction, I am the President of the Club and have been a part of this wonderful organisation for more than 8 years. Like many, I am passionate about the club, it’s ethos and the positive people I am surrounded by each week. We work hard to ensure the kids best interests are always considered and the focus holds strong around their development and growth.

How can you help? By encouraging every child, getting in there and raking the sand pit, scanning the barcodes at the finish line & telling the athletes well done as they cross the line, getting around the track on a 400m/800m/1500m and supporting the efforts of the kids. Let’s do this together to facilitate a positive nurturing environment to allow our athletes to flourish.

I have asked to include in this news bulletin frequently asked questions. I receive many great queries and felt it was an opportunity to share these with you.

On a final note – the details for Friday night, plus weekly coaching all follow after FAQ’s.

Thank you
Nicole George

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where does my membership fee go?

If you paid the $200 early bird fee, $89 automatically goes to LAVIC for marketing, administration, insurances etc. That leaves approximately $110 per member for SLAC to cover costs incurred over 16+ sessions such as equipment purchases/replacements, coaching costs, track rental, utilities, marketing and more.

Do you pay coaches?

Yes, we do pay coaches as they have all completed a coaching qualification. There is a payment scale in place based on years of coaching and qualification.

It is important to note that we do have some wonderful parents who have voluntarily trained as a coach and help us offset coaching costs. We are extremely grateful to Barry, Todd, Natasha, Mladen, Sarah and Ben who do this for the Club most weeks.

Do members of the Committee get paid?

No, we don’t. we are all working parents who are care about the club and happy to give our personal time to run the operations. We call out for help regularly as it is a big job getting everything down for more than 200 members each week.

How does my child get better to win?

This question should be rephrased to ‘how can my child get better to achieve a personal best?”. Personal Bests are the sole focus at Sandringham Little Athletics Club. We teach the children this. Winning is amazing and we certainly celebrate athletes for this, but coming second third, nineth etc is also to be celebrated especially if it is a personal best. Little Athletes teaches many life skills and how to win, lose, focus on your personal objectives are just some of these learnings.

Yelling on the sidelines for your child to go faster is not in the spirit of the club. Certainly, offer encouragement as many children can hear spectator voices but be mindful of the language used as some make take comments the wrong way. We encourage supportive, positive words of wisdom.

Do I have to do weekly coaching?

No, you don’t have to do weekly coaching, but it is offered to members Under 8+ and a great opportunity for the children to keep developing their skills in order to achieve personal bests.

Changes will be made to the weekly coaching from 6 December. These details will be shared very soon.
